The world benefited from these exchanges in the form of even greater music from those he inspired, but also from him.Īt the same time, the racial diversity of Brubeck’s traveling combos – and of other “Jazz Ambassadors” sent by the State Department during this period – made a statement in and of itself, even if at the time the United States wasn’t even coming close to living up to that standard. But Brubeck didn’t just play for his audiences, he listened to them, too. ![]() The music he heard in the countries he visited inspired many of his greatest hits, including those on “Time Out” such as “Blue Rondo a la Turk” and “Take Five.” At the same time, Brubeck’s strong civil rights stance empowered him to refuse to play in South Africa due to its brutal system of racial Apartheid when the contract required him to play with an all-white band.īoth, it seems to me, are examples of the nature and power of public diplomacy, which is predicated on two-way, interactive communication and exchange of ideas. The State Department sent Brubeck around the world to spread the gospel of Jazz, and with it a more subtle message of America’s cultural greatness and freedom during the Cold War. Those tours played an important role in Brubeck’s life, and his contributions went beyond his music. He continued to lead tours of “jazz ambassadors” throughout his life, and was awarded the prestigious Benjamin Franklin Award for Public Diplomacy in 2008 for his efforts. Less well known, however, is his major contributions to American public diplomacy. In the late 1950s the State Department sent his quartet on a world tour as part of their efforts to reach foreign publics through the power of jazz, which many consider to be not only the greatest American music genre, but perhaps the country’s only truly indigenous one. (He also received an Honorary Degree from George Washington University – the home of this blog and the Institute for Public Diplomacy and Global Communication – in 2010.) His seminal album “Time Out,” which includes the classic hit for which this blog is named, broke new ground in jazz composition while achieving the kind of popular success rarely seen by even the genre’s giants. Brubeck’s status as a giant and a pioneer in jazz is well known, and a large part of why he received the Kennedy Center Honor in 2009. The contributors to the Take Five blog were all saddened to learn about the passing of legendary jazz pianist – and public diplomat – Dave Brubeck on Wednesday.

Better to spend it on bike lanes, bikeshare stations, sidewalks, or transit.īut transportation budgets aren’t all-or-nothing. With so many demands on transportation budgets and so little money generally available for bike improvements, spending money to subsidize car parking may be a questionable idea. With park & pedals, planners could add wayfinding signs, maintenance kiosks, secure bike parking, lockers, even bikeshare stations and bus connections. They’re easier to advertise, and they provide natural places for hubs of bike amenities. Why shouldn’t the same idea work for bikes? A few parking lots near major bikeways like the Custis Trail and the Metropolitan Branch Trail might indeed prove useful. Transit agencies should never design their entire systems around park and ride users, but a few park and rides at strategic locations can be a good thing. That’s not as efficient as having people live within walking or biking distance of the transit station, but it’s better than making them drive the full distance into the city. ![]() Park and ride lots around transit stations solve that problem by putting the onus on drivers to get to the station. The hardest part about providing transportation from low-density suburban areas is the so-called “last mile.” That’s the gap between commuters’ homes and a major highway or transit line, where there’s not enough people going to the same place at the same time to provide convenient shuttles. ![]() It’s a fascinating idea, and an unusual twist on the last-mile problem of urban transportation. Park & pedals split the difference, allowing suburban commuters to drive where it’s easier to drive, then bike through the part of the city where it’s easier to bike. But most commuters from far-flung suburbs aren’t willing to bike that far every day. How do you get more commuters to bicycle into the city? ![]() I ran this setup for over 3 years with absolutely no problems. I preferred using the bolts as it allowed me to fine tune the camber I needed. The alternative to using correcting bolts, is to elongate the upper strut mount hole (on the strut itself, not the nuckle). The bolts where relatively inexpensive ($16/pair). Essentially the bolts have a lobe (similar to a camshaft) that allows about 1.5 degrees or positive or negative wheel adjustment. To compensate for the additional height, I installed a set of camber/caster bolts from Eibach. Not to mention, but it'll handle absolutely horribly. Within a few inches, it's not noticeable, but as you begin to reach below the 2.5" point, the camber needs to be addressed in order to keep tire wear at a minimum. Naturally, the camber was off on my front end, considering the arc that a IFS suspension travels along. So, about 4 hours later, I had the 2" suspension complete. The 2" spacers gave me more than 2" of overall height, much closer to 3". Having a limited budget, I read the Zuwharrie tech article that Heather Galvin published about a 5" budget 4 door lift using honed out Jeep TJ coil spacers and a 3" body lift. Not a whole lot, so I wanted to gain a bit more lift and tire clearance so I didn't drag the belly across everything. At stock height, they rubbed a bit at full stuff, and the the knobs would catch the front bumper cover at full lock.Īt this point, I had given the zuk about an inch of additional clearance (27" stock tire vs. My first "Big" upgrade was a set of 29" swampers, and what a difference those made. I also salvaged a "never bashed" tracker front skidplate that I installed to help protect the front end (since I was skirting the ground at stock height). Investigating more closely and doing a battery voltage test will clarify whether the starting problem is due to the battery. The Windows "ipconfig" command allows you to access the address data of a device in a local network. The router automatically generates an IP address that changes with each browsing session. This means that each device that dials in to a private wireless network is allocated its own IP address. However, restarting the router does cause a new random address to be reissued by the provider.īeyond this, internal IP addresses are assigned within local networks and are not outwardly visible. As the IP address is provided by the server, it is not possible to change an IP address so it contains a specific sequence of numbers. Our IP Checker can show you this public IP address. The web server then knows exactly where to send the data. For example, if you open a website, your browser transmits your IP address to the web server of the website. The IP address is a kind of individual identification number that enables targeted data exchange. Within this network data is constantly sent and received. These methods may not work for some users, as scammers are super cautious when sending anonymous texts to people. Scammers are too smart to use their original emails and even if they do, there is a good chance you will find plenty of profiles with the same email address. While this is a wonderful way to find someone’s location, it hardly works these days. For example, if they have a public account, you could check out their photos and check the location to know where they are from.
