So they basically have a machine… These machines exist, and these refillable cans, the technology exists already, they just haven’t necessarily been geared towards us. The way the retailer works, the retailer then becomes more like the factory. You would pay a higher price on the initial purchase, but that’s just paying your container price, and then you get it at a cheaper price every time you come and return those vessels. So if the stipulation was that they had to come in a quantity of 12 or 6, or whatever, but you could mix and match your colours. We know that we want people to go to a store and be able to pick their colours like they regularly would. We know there are a finite number of cans in circulation. My friend and I, 18ism, we were sitting around brainstorming, so we were like “let’s start there and work backwards”. They may have a little wear and tear, but they’ve been cleaned, and so from the consumer viewpoint nothing has changed. But my idea was that if you only produced a finite number of the cans, then how could you make the consumer experience the same? And I thought about swapper crates.įrom a consumer point of view, when you go to the pub and buy a beer in a swapper crate, you’re buying them refrigerated, filled, with a label on them, they just look like a brand new bottle. So, I thought a model could be, and this is just a really simplistic idea (and I’ve spoken to people since who had poked a few holes in it, but they are trying to think a way around it). If you miss any part of that chain and that experience, obviously it’s not going to work, so I had to re-think it. The thing I had to think about was, and this is where it gets complicated, I had to think about the whole production to retailer to consumer chain. There are only a finite number of bottles in circulation. You know in Australia and New Zealand, a swapper crate of beer, from the local pub. I couldn’t find out what proportion of that specifically is aerosol paint, but I figure it’s a decent amount and it got me thinking about how to curb waste. That’s cooking oils, hairspray, all combined, but it’s a lot. It’s about 24 million aerosol products disposed of daily. A friend of mine, another artist, him and I went down with extra trash bags one day to do a clean, and we couldn’t even fit all the cans. Leaving half-empty cans, they’re rusting and the plastic caps, the lids, everything. I was just astounded at how many people were leaving their litter. So the scene went underground, and we have a very extensive network of storm drain systems under Auckland city, so people are painting in these storm drains, which obviously run all the way to the ocean, through a network of streams and rivers and everything. So from late 2010 onwards they just cleaned the city up, so anything that people were doing got painted up within a matter of hours. We had this big buff that was timed around the Rugby world cup. I started thinking about the amount of waste, I started to look differently at the waste, and I started to feel really disappointed. It could have been anything, but it did get me thinking. One was that I did have some health issues and the doctors really never conclusively could say one way or another that it was attributed to paint exposure, or if it was stress, or if it was genetic. A couple of catalysts for thinking about things differently. There were a couple of things that hit me.
